verena barbosa

is a Latin-American filmmaker, Journalist and film scholar who lives in Galway, Ireland. As a multifaceted creative, Verena independently writes, directs, and produces her own short films. 

She also produces and directs artistic events, serves as a cinema historian and researcher for the Brazilian Embassy in Ireland, and provides art direction and online image consulting for independent businesses and artists.

Crafting high-concept narratives for children and adults that blend Irish and Brazilian cultures. Her work explores a diverse spectrum from myths, philosophical explorations and ancestral knowledge to the intricacies of everyday social dynamics, politics, identity and acculturation.

Verena’s storytelling and design approach gravitates towards magical realism, practical effects, and embraces Third Cinema Ideology.

In addition to making films, she created Brazil on Screen, a cultural platform dedicated to exploring and sharing Brazilian Cinema in Ireland by merging both cultures.

She holds an MA in Film Studies from the University of Galway and receives mentorship from Nora Twomey, Academy Award nominee and co-founder of Cartoon Saloon Studios.
